DORIS Q

While attending law school at the University of Technology, Sydney, Australian-Chinese designer Doris Qiu decided to broaden her sartorial horizon and undertook a dual degree studying fashion design at East Sydney TAFE. After completing both degrees, the bourgeoning designer then supplemented her studies with exchange programs and short-term studies at the best design schools such as Central St. Martins, Parsons and Instituto Marangoni. It was after attending the prestigious Central St. Martins, Doris Qiu created her first capsule collection in 2012 under the moniker, The Letter Q. Stocked by avant Hong Kong retailer in Soho, the 12-piece collection sold-out immediately. Buoyed by a responsive market, Doris then created her first full collection in 2013. The collection garnered acclaim from a number of international publications and was selected to be shown at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia in April 2013, as part of the sponsored New Generation Show, and the collection was picked up by NastyGal and Urban Outfitters from the U.S. Rebranding to DORIS Q appeared on various prestigious international press such as the Wall Street Journal, Bazaar Australia, Elle Australia, Russh magazine, Pagesdigital, Italian Vogue, Elle China, Femina China, Cosmopolitan Hong Kong and so forth. For her Resort 14 collection, "Flamingo at Coachella", Qiu took inspiration from the Coachella music festival and the Flamingo bird and created a young, breezy yet still edgy collection incorporating various traditional hand-beading and embellishing techniques. This collection has been selected to showcase at the most well-known industry trade shows in their 'New Talent' spaces, including Coterie New York, Tranoi Paris and roomsLINK Tokyo. For SS14 collection “Chasing Ice” ,Qiu was inspired by the collapse of glacier and the hauntingly beautiful imagery in the documentary “Chasing Ice” by James Balog and incorporated unique technique such as a variety of pleats, digital print on sequins and neoprene to achieve the layers of glacier visual effect. Doris is now the design director of DORIS Q, chief buyer for TIKKA Boutique and Contributing Editor of ELLE China magazine.
