It’s the subtle nuances and design techniques of designer Karla Spetic’s self-titled label that has garnered the attention of the Australian and international fashion industry. Karla was born in Dubrovnik, Croatia and immigrated to Australia in 1993. With two suitcases and a vision for creating timeless designs with a unique twist, she began her foray into the fashion world. After graduating from East Sydney Fashion Design Studio in 2005, Karla launched her label that debuted her trademark tailoring and distinctly feminine colours and prints. Her collections have always brought together masculine elements and relaxed silhouettes, with soft edges and light fabrications. Fitted shapes conform beside loose lines that fall from the body. Simple and complex, Karla creates a unique and ever-evolving interpretation on tailoring that forms her signature look. In 2008, Karla debuted her highly acclaimed Spring/Summer 2008 collection at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, showing a collection filled with movement, striking colour and original textile printing. Buyers ensued both locally and internationally. Sculpting distinctive shapes with a high quality finish is paramount to all of Karla’s collections and something that as a designer, she is never willing to compromise. Karla Spetic’s label is a resplendent celebration of a designers’ journey with a unique vision. The results have seen her collections garnering such attention from the (Sydney) magazine, who have named her as one of the “Top 10 People to Watch in 2009” in February 2009.
