KEVA | J

Born in Brooklyn, NY, raised in Miami, FL and of Jamaican decent, Keva has always had an innate desire to become a trend-setter. Inspired by her grandmother’s ambitions to become a fashion designer and with a supportive family, Keva pursued her childhood dream of creating ensembles for Barbie®. Her day-to-day styling of the mini-fashion icon ultimately ignited her individual identity and allowed her to flourish into a full-fledged fashionista in high school. Her undeniable knack for fashion and constant hailing for her personal style affirmed her talents as she was voted “Best Dressed” by her peers’ senior year. Upon graduation Keva continued to fine-tune her design skills at Florida State University by enrolling in apparel design courses. Leading up to her junior year, Keva secured a highly coveted internship at avant-garde label Baby Phat in Los Angeles, where she worked alongside patternmakers and assistant designers. Her colleagues soon took notice of her innovative talent and included one of her designs into the fashion house’s production lines. At this time, Keva realized that her role in the fashion world was to create an independent label that would allow her to fully express her creativity. Immediately following graduation in 2005 and fully armed with her Bachelors of Science in Apparel Design, Keva returned to Miami. Even at the young age of 25, Keva’s unique take on style and trend-setter status has been acknowledged and applauded by fashion television heavyweights. After attending countless fashion shows and securing a presence alongside the city’s fashion elite, world-renowned designer Esteban Cortazar, Head Designer of Ungaro, approached her and praised her work simply stating, “You got it.” In March 2006, Keva secured a spot as the first alternative on BRAVO TV’s Project Runway in March 2006, placing her as the first of 23 individuals qualifying for the show. While no one dropped out allowing her the chance to be on the show, this only championed her to work all the more harder. Leaving her post in Miami, Keva vowed to take the fashion world by storm and relocated to the nation’s fashion capital -- New York City. With a range of influences from Miami’s tropical-chic lifestyle to the structural silhouettes of New York skyscrapers and the color palette of Jamaican Rastafarians, Keva soon launched cutting-edge fashion and swimwear line KEVA l J. Keva, who avoids mainstream trends and abides by her own fashion identity, explains, “I believe that in fashion design, in order to be notable, designers must set their own trends. Designers must have a keen understanding that designs serve as the framework of your collection, where the overall fit of the garment is fundamental. Similar to wearing a piece of pop culture artwork,” Keva continues, “it's almost like a revelation – your expectations will exceed themselves. My swimsuits are positively unpredictable.”
