Launched in 2011, ZSADAR (pronounced sha-dahr) opens the door to a world of garments for men that celebrate an avant-garde aesthetic. Attention is given to drape, form and tailoring and is supported with the selection of luxurious fabrics such as Australian wool, bamboo, silk, cotton, linen and jersey. A key ideal of Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi can be defined as beauty that is imperfect, impermanent and incomplete in an object. Japanese design influence is apparent in ZSADAR’s support of imperfection by skewing or exposing seams, using asymmetric proportions and distressing fabrics. With a strong artistic, rather than commercial, approach to fashion design, ZSADAR draws inspiration from the ideas of androgyny, anarchy, the surreal, experimentation and subversion. Working with some of the Australia’s best pattern makers and manufacturers, all garments are designed and made in Australia. With a background in graphic arts and communications, designer Shane Newton launched menswear label ZSADAR in 2011. His training in the arts has helped create a more experimental and conceptual approach to design. Balancing a modern approach to collections, Shane uses unconventional pattern-making techniques and textiles not commonly associated with menswear. Working with a theme for each collection, all pieces capture both sabotage and the sublime. Shane is deeply inspired by nature and subversion, translating these into modern menswear pieces.
