CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF AUSTRALIAN FASHION

In the 25 years since the first edition of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, Australian fashion has become a global force. Mercedes-Benz Presents, MBFWA’s marquee event, will commemorate the monumental occasion of MBFWA’s 25th year with a tribute show to the Australian fashion industry.

Mercedes-Benz Presents: 25 Years of Australian Fashion, will feature a roll call of Australian fashion luminaries and designs representing the past, present and future of Australian fashion. The show will celebrate the talented individuals who have built an enduring and vibrant fashion industry, and those who are shaping its future. The show will be held on the opening day of MBFWA on Monday 11 May, following a full day of runway shows and programming, at Carriageworks in Sydney.

In an effort to brush you up on all you need to know about this not-to-be-missed special event, we’ve picked some of our favourite moments from the last 25 years of MBFWA.

1996 Akira Isagowa debuts his collection on the MBFWA runway, winning the Next Gen competition that is launched that same year.

1997 International supermodel, Linda Evangelista, walks for Alex Perry.

1999 Peter Morrissey presents a hybrid Australian and Aboriginal flag ensemble, modelled by Sarah Murdoch nee O’Hare; Plus-size model Sophie Dahl walks for Charlie Brown. Alannah Hill sends models down the runway holding farm animals.

2000 Eva Herzigova walks in the Tigerlily show in a pearl-encrusted bikini; Jerry Hall walks for Charlie Brown.

2001 Kristy Hinze walks in the Tigerlily show wearing a $1 million dollar bikini and a live python; Michelle Jank presents her ‘Federation Dress’ at MBFWA, featuring deconstructed Australian flags, tea towels and bank bags. Tusbi send rats down the runway.

2003 A 15 year old Gemma Ward makes her debut at MBFWA; Paris Hilton walks for Wayne Cooper

2006 Aboriginal model Samantha Harris makes her Australian Fashion Week debut.

2009 Dion Lee debuts in the Kings Cross Car Park; Romance Was Born’s show at Sydney Theatre Company brings front row to tears.

2010 Dion Lee presents his collection inside the Sydney Opera House.

2018 Camilla closes MBFWA with her ode to Japan just weeks after Camilla Franks was diagnosed with breast cancer.

2019 Double Rainbouu takes over the Chinese Gardens of Friendship; Carla Zampatti closes with a show featuring the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra.

Since the debut of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia in 1996, the concept has since been replicated in dozens of countries around the world creating the opportunity to have launched many talented individuals and brands onto the world fashion stage. The global success of the initiative now sees Mercedes-Benz the brand active at more than around 80 fashion events in over 40 countries.
