PROJECT NEXTGEN APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN FOR MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION WEEK AUSTRALIA 2016

SYDNEY (October 28, 2015) – IMG opened applications today for Project NextGen, a newly launched program to support and mentor emerging Australian designers. The program is an evolution of the New Generation show that helped discover and launch the careers of designers such as Kate Sylvester, Gorman, Sass and Bide, and Akira at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia since 1996.

Participating designers will be selected by a panel of established industry experts and the program will culminate in an official invitation for up to six talented designers to show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia as part of the St.George NextGen runway show in May 2016 in front of an audience of local and international media and buyers.

“For the first time, an influential panel of fashion industry experts will review the applicants based on the exceptional talent designers have demonstrated thus far, and their promise to succeed as part of Project NextGen,” said Emily Weight, Director of Strategy and Brand, IMG Fashion. “As the local industry evolves and becomes increasingly global, it’s important to embrace industry knowledge and foster new talent ensuring the very best young creatives are properly mentored and presented to the international fashion community.”

The panel includes Edwina McCann (Editor-In-Chief Vogue Australia), Kellie Hush (Editor-In-Chief Harper’s Bazaar Australia), Justin O’Shea (Buying Director mytheresa.com), Emily Weight (Director Fashion IMG Australia), Eva Galambos (Director & Buyer Parlour X) and Chris Buchanan (General Manager, Ellery & Ten Pieces).

“Having the good fortune of experience, I believe we have an obligation to guide, assist & nurture emerging talent,” said Chris Buchanan, General Manager, Ellery & Ten Pieces. “If there is one thing I know about Australia, it’s that we’re not short on talent; and programs like NextGen play an important role in the commercialisation of creativity & further develop the industry as a whole.”

The designers selected for Project NextGen will receive a fully funded runway show on the MBFWA schedule, mentoring by a St.George Business Advisor for a 12 month period, industry networking opportunities, exposure to MBFWA attending buyers, and invaluable marketing, publicity, digital and social media support to reach a global audience of millions.

The 2016 Project NextGen designers will be announced in February 2016.
